Markus von Hänsel-Hohenhausen wrote his main epistemological work on the line between philosophy and theology ("I think, therefore I believe - cogito ergo credo", followed by "From the electron to the Holy Trinity"). He illustrated his theory of the co-ordination of knowledge and belief in a historical example (on Princess Gallitzin and her early attempt to harmonise the Enlightenment with faith, science and Christian life) and in the portrait. The artistic image must show namely this spiritual-corporal duality of humans if it is to be true and proves the unity lived between knowledge and belief. In his literary portraits, the author primarily demonstrates what the human can be if he lives from the consciousness of his spiritually formed corporality. Contributions on the history of the Catholic Church have been published alongside this, such as his dissertation on the relationship of the State to the Church as well as earlier works which have featured in leading literary history, history and law journals (Heine-Jahrbuch, Historische Zeitschrift, Savigny-Zeitschrift für Rechtsgeschichte, i.a.) Hänsel-Hohenhausen is also an encyclopedia author (e.g. RGG: “Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart” [Religion in history and at present]) and at the same time has submitted bibliographies which today, like the collection and autopsy of all Freemason magazines of the 18th and 19th century, the anonymous autobiographical writings of the 19th century and the early reception of Oscar Wilde in Germany, are considered to be foundational works (most recent bibliography as the foundation of new research at the University of South Carolina, here, note 16). In fiction, Markus von Hänsel-Hohenhausen has only occasionally been active as a publisher such as for the well-known anthology for Goethe's 250th birthday (1999), where numerous literature prize-winners participated: "Im Namen Goethes!" [“In the name of Goethe!”] contributors included Günther Grass, Ralph Giordano, Alfred Grosser, Iring Fetscher et al.
